Microsoft has revealed details of a massive Xbox outage that lasted about 15 hours, depriving many console owners of access not only to online services but also to previously purchased digital games. Scott Van Vliet, CTO of the Xbox division, publicly apologized to users and explained the cause of the incident, as well as the measures the company intends to take to prevent a similar situation from recurring.

According to Van Vliet, the problems began with a failure of an external licensing service. As a result, users encountered login errors, and consoles stopped correctly verifying rights to launch digital games. The outage caused a chain reaction: many players lost access to their library, and launching most digital projects became impossible. The problems also affected Xbox partners involved in game publishing and store operations.

Microsoft reported that automated monitoring systems almost immediately detected the malfunctions and assigned the situation a "major incident" status. Engineers promptly isolated the problematic infrastructure and began redirecting network traffic to working nodes, which allowed the service to be fully restored.

However, Xbox management believes that the main problem was not the failure of a single service itself, but the consequences it caused. Van Vliet noted that the company is more concerned about why a failure in one component could disable such a significant part of the ecosystem and why recovery took so long.

In the coming weeks, Microsoft plans to modernize Xbox's internal infrastructure. The company intends to strengthen the reliability of services responsible for authorization and game launching, improve mechanisms for detecting such malfunctions, and accelerate user notification during outages.
