"She's the Perfect Number One": Michael Mando Praises Sydney Sweeney's On-Set Behavior for "Gundam"

The actor highly praised Sydney Sweeney's leadership qualities.

Actor Michael Mando ("Spider-Man: Brand New Day"), who played one of the roles in the upcoming Netflix film "Gundam," shared his impressions of working with Sydney Sweeney and director Jim Mickle.

In an interview with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Mando recalled an incident when producers tried to impose a detail on his character that he himself doubted but hesitated to object to:

"I was trying to hide my embarrassment, but Sydney, on the way to the set, looked at me and asked, 'Do you even like this?' I said, 'Not really.' She said, 'Me neither. Come with me.' She went up to the producer, and exactly five seconds later, that detail was no longer in the script. This is an amazing example of generosity, when the lead actor sees a colleague's discomfort and takes responsibility to help. She's the perfect 'number one' on set." — Michael Mando

Mando also praised director Jim Mickle, calling him "a ray of light and a visionary," and promised viewers impressive action in open space. According to the actor, the performers had to spend a lot of time on wires, simulating work in zero-gravity conditions.

Filming for the first live-action film based on the Gundam franchise, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate, concluded in Australia about two months ago. Along with Sweeney and Mando, the cast includes Jason Isaacs, Noah Centineo, Nonso Anozie, and Shiori Kutsuna. The film is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2027.
