It's Not Horror: Christopher Nolan Names the Film Genre He Fears Directing the Most
The Oscar winner with an impressive portfolio frankly admitted which format makes him feel helpless.
Throughout his career, director Christopher Nolan has conquered a variety of genres: from intricate sci-fi thrillers ("Inception," "Tenet") and detective noirs ("Memento," "The Prestige") to superhero classics (the "Dark Knight" trilogy) and monumental historical dramas ("Oppenheimer," "Dunkirk"). However, there is one cinematic direction that even he shies away from.
During his visit to "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," the filmmaker confessed that he is most afraid of directing romantic comedies:
"I think making a rom-com is incredibly difficult. I love watching such films, but the people who make comedies are doing one of the hardest things in the world – making people laugh. The tension and risks are enormous: if I show my film to an audience and they don't like something, I can always think, 'Oh, they just didn't get it.' In comedy, you can't hide behind that. I would be scared to take on something like that."
At the same time, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director hinted at an interest in a completely different direction – horror. According to him, working on the adaptation of Homer's "Odyssey" only fueled this interest:
"It definitely whetted my appetite. But I've always felt that horror needs to be approached very carefully from a conceptual standpoint. It requires an amazing idea. It's not about the technical side or what professional desires I'd like to fulfill. It all comes down to the story. So I keep looking."
Nolan has not yet announced what his next film will be after "Odyssey." The exhausting production of the film severely drained the director and his team, so the director's next work is expected to take at least three years to arrive.
