PlayStation 5 Sales Plummeted by 36% Last Year

And these figures are before Sony's console price hike.

Sony has released its financial report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (FY2026 Q1), indicating a significant decline in PlayStation 5 console sales compared to the same period last year.

During the reported quarter, the company sold 1.6 million PS5 consoles, whereas in the first quarter of FY2025, sales amounted to 2.5 million units. Thus, shipments decreased by approximately 36% year-over-year.

This dynamic can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, a significant portion of the target audience has already purchased a PlayStation 5 in previous years. Secondly, the console is in the later stages of its lifecycle, and some users may prefer to wait for the next generation – PlayStation 6. Additionally, the market is gradually becoming saturated, which also affects sales rates.

It is worth noting that the published results pertain to the period before the PlayStation 5 price increase, which took effect in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026. This means that the impact of the price hike is not yet reflected in the official statistics.

The next quarterly results will show how significantly the price change has affected demand. For comparison, in the second quarter of FY2025, Sony sold 4 million consoles, and in the third quarter, 7.9 million, which were among the most successful figures for the last fiscal year.
