Director of the new "Resident Evil" names his top 5 games in the Resident Evil series

Zach Cregger preferred modern installments of the series and remakes of classics.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Zach Cregger, director of the new Resident Evil adaptation, compiled a ranking of his five favorite Capcom games for IGN. The director placed Resident Evil 4 first, combining the 2005 original and the 2023 remake. Second place went to the Resident Evil 2 remake, and the top three was rounded out by Resident Evil Requiem – the newest installment in the series, released in February 2026. However, the list did not include any games from the original trilogy era: Cregger preferred modern installments and remakes of classics.

The full list is as follows:

1. Resident Evil 4;
2. Resident Evil 2 Remake;
3. Resident Evil Requiem;
4. Resident Evil Village;
5. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard.

The new adaptation will not be a direct retelling of any of the listed games. The film will tell an independent story about medical courier Brian, played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself in Raccoon City, engulfed by an epidemic.

Although the film borrows individual elements from Resident Evil 2, Cregger allowed himself to significantly deviate from the source material. The action was moved from autumn 1998 to the snowy winter of 2026, allowing the characters to use smartphones and other modern technologies.

The premiere of the new Resident Evil will take place on September 18, 2026. In addition to Austin Abrams, the film stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser.
