The long-awaited animated film "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has finally officially reached audiences after a dramatic situation involving a leaked version without key visual effects. However, attentive fans of the original Nickelodeon series still found a reason for disappointment — the film lacks the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, Suki.
In an interview with Variety, franchise co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino admitted that he expected audience dissatisfaction and explained the reasons for this decision:
"I knew fans would be upset. Suki is indeed not in the main part of the film. We tried script options with her involvement, but with a runtime of only 85 minutes, tough decisions have to be made. It was already difficult for us to give enough screen time and attention to our main five characters."
DiMartino also clarified that the character's absence from the screen does not mean she has retired. The warrior, along with the Kyoshi Warriors, was at that moment performing another important mission in the Avatar world, and her further story is now developing in the pages of solo comics.
Film director Lauren Montgomery added that in early drafts, a scene with a celebratory parade in Republic City was even planned for Suki, but it had to be cut for the sake of the overall narrative pace. In the end, fans are left to be content with only a short cameo of the character during the credits.
