Mahershala Ali confirmed that he is no longer going to play Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with GQ, the actor stated that he has finally left the problematic project behind and now wants to focus on original stories:

"No offense. I've been in this business for almost 30 years, and I've learned one thing: what's meant for you will find you, and the rest won't. For some reason, this project wasn't for me. So I had to move on – and I already have."

Ali reminded that he was under contract with the studio, which had all the necessary resources to launch production. According to the actor, seven years of inaction speak for themselves:

"They had billions of dollars, and I was under contract with them. If they wanted to make a movie, we would have made it. So, there won't be a movie. They didn't want to make it, so all further questions should be directed to them."

Instead of "Blade," Ali starred in "Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother" by former "Blade" director Bassam Tariq. The actor was able to apply his weapon skills and physical training, which he had been doing for over a year for the role of the vampire hunter. According to him, this allowed him to feel "creative redemption."

Marvel Studios announced the new "Blade" back at Comic-Con 2019. Over the subsequent years, the project changed several screenwriters, lost directors, and then disappeared from Disney's release calendar. Recently, Kevin Feige called himself a "complete failure" because the film never got off the ground, but he did not confirm the project's cancellation.

According to rumors, Blade might appear in the movie "Midnight Sons." Previously, fans wondered if Mahershala Ali would return to the role or if Marvel would bring in Wesley Snipes, who appeared in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Now, one of the options seems to be ruled out – the studio will either have to find a new actor or bring back Snipes.
