"It's not a marketing ploy": "Wonder Man" creator comments on series cancellation
Some fans speculated that after the success of the series, Marvel might continue Simon Williams' story in a different format.
Andrew Guest, the showrunner of the "Wonder Man" series, commented on the sudden cancellation of the project four months after its renewal for a second season. In his statement, Guest refuted rumors that the series' cancellation was a Marvel marketing ploy, which allegedly planned to continue Simon Williams' story in a feature film:
"I want to clarify what I can. This is not a marketing trick. There is no movie in development."
According to Guest, the reason for the cancellation was not scheduling problems or a lack of desire from the creative team to continue working. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Ben Kingsley, and Destin Daniel Cretton were ready to return, and preparations for the second season were already in full swing:
"Contracts were signed, schedules cleared. The writers' room was supposed to open this month, and production was planned to start early next year. Inside Disney and Marvel, they decided that the project no longer made sense for them, although it did a few months ago."
According to Guest, the reason why the project "lost its meaning" was not even disclosed to him – the series' cancellation came as much of a surprise to him as it did to many others. By the time of the cancellation, Guest had already written the first episode and, together with the team, had prepared a plan for the entire season. According to him, the continuation was supposed to surpass the first chapter, but now viewers will most likely not see the intended story.
