Sony CFO Lin Tao, during the company's Q1 FY2026 earnings report, once again commented on the decision to abandon physical discs for PlayStation, stating that this move would not deprive the console of its key advantages over PCs.

Sony had previously confirmed that it plans to completely cease production of game discs for PlayStation from January 2028, despite negative reactions from some parts of the community. During the report, the company's management acknowledged player dissatisfaction but emphasized that they do not expect this strategy to have a negative impact on the business.

Later, Goldman Sachs analyst Minami Hase asked whether the abandonment of physical media would lead to PlayStation becoming too similar to PCs, where digital distribution has long been the standard.

In response, Lin Tao stated that the presence of discs has never been the main difference between PlayStation and personal computers. According to her, the console's strengths remain a carefully curated content catalog, a stable gaming environment, and a more affordable price compared to high-performance gaming PCs.

We do not believe that discs are the factor that distinguishes PlayStation from PCs. Our advantages are carefully curated content, a stable gaming environment, and a more affordable cost compared to high-performance gaming computers. Therefore, we do not believe that abandoning discs will affect this distinction. In the future, PlayStation and PCs will be able to coexist peacefully.
