Silent Hill Producer Explained Why Remakes Alone Weren't Enough to Revive the Series
Konami plans to release one new Silent Hill game every year.
Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto stated that the true reboot of the franchise was made possible not only by the successful Silent Hill 2 remake but also by the development of entirely new games. According to him, projects like Silent Hill f convinced fans of Konami's serious intentions to bring the series back to life.
Speaking at the CEDEC 2026 developer conference in Japan, Okamoto said that the company needed a "big reboot" to re-engage the audience with the franchise. Although Konami could have limited itself to releasing remakes, the publisher deliberately rejected a "testing the waters" strategy.
According to the producer, players quickly understand when a company is merely testing audience interest rather than seriously developing a series. That's why Konami decided to work on a remake and entirely new projects simultaneously.
Okamoto also noted that remakes alone cannot ensure a full return of the franchise. In his estimation, even in the best-case scenario, a remake can only bring back about half of the series' former fans. To attract both old and new players, it was necessary to show that Silent Hill has a future.
That's why in 2022, Konami simultaneously announced three projects: Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall. Back in 2025, Okamoto explained that the company intentionally abandoned the idea of releasing only one remake because it wanted to demonstrate the seriousness of its plans to revive the brand.
We didn't want to announce just one remake to "test the waters." We wanted people to see how serious we are about reviving the series.
He emphasized that only new games allow players to see the future of the franchise. If the company itself takes a wait-and-see approach, fans will behave similarly.
