Sony wants to make a fifth "Spider-Man" with Tom Holland - but a sequel hasn't been announced yet
After the phenomenal start of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" at the global box office, Sony Pictures management began discussing the future of the franchise.
Shortly before the premiere of "Spider-Man: No Way Home," Tom Holland said he already knows how he will one day pass the baton to the next Spider-Man. However, a Variety journalist suggested that after such success, Sony would hardly want to let the actor go, and asked Sony Pictures head Tom Rothman to comment on future plans. In response, the executive compared the situation to trying to ask a Super Bowl winner if he could repeat his success next season:
"I love these questions. It's like a coach winning the Super Bowl, coming to a press conference, and being asked: 'Will you win next year?' The honest answer is: we don't know right now. We've been completely focused on this film for almost two years. I can say one thing: I very, very much hope for a sequel. I've heard that Tom would like to continue playing, and we would be happy to have him back."
Producer Amy Pascal also told Variety that she hopes to keep "No Way Home" director Destin Daniel Cretton, but emphasized that work on the next installment has not yet begun:
"There's no writers' room. But if it's up to us, Destin will definitely be back."
According to Pascal, Sony and Marvel Studios enter into separate agreements for each film. The creators fundamentally do not launch the next part in advance and try to make sure that each film is perceived as a standalone story:
"It's funny, but we never planned what we would do next from the very beginning. I think that's the advantage of this approach: each film must be self-contained. This has proven to be a good formula, as each film becomes a standalone work."
Earlier, Pascal expressed hope that "No Way Home" would kick off a new trilogy, but emphasized that this was only her wish, not an approved plan by Sony and Marvel.
"Spider-Man: No Way Home" earned $360 million in its debut weekend in North America, setting a new domestic box office record. The film's global opening weekend gross reached $932 million.
