Return to OASIS: Screenwriter Confirms Development of "Ready Player One" Sequel

Player Two will have to get ready after all, but it's unclear when.

Screenwriter Zak Penn confirmed that a sequel to the sci-fi film "Ready Player One" is still in development. During the premiere of "Stuart Bloom Couldn't Save the Universe," journalists from The Direct asked the author about the project's status, and Penn replied briefly: "I'm working on it."

Penn co-wrote the script for the first film with Ernest Cline, the author of the original novel. His comment confirms that the adaptation of the book "Ready Player Two" has not been canceled, but details about the current stage of production are still unavailable. Warner Bros. has not yet announced a start date for filming, a director, or a cast.

The first film "Ready Player One" was released in 2018. Steven Spielberg's film grossed approximately $607 million worldwide, starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and Mark Rylance.

The novel "Ready Player Two" was released in 2020 and continues the story of Wade Watts. In the book, the hero discovers the ONI neural interface, which allows him to fully immerse himself in the virtual world and perceive it with all his senses. After this, Wade receives a new mission on which the future of OASIS depends.

In 2024, Steven Spielberg announced that he would return to the project as a producer but would not direct the sequel. At the time, the filmmaker noted that the team was still looking for an approach to the story and determining the film's future direction.
