Sony has started warning PS5 disc edition buyers that the era of physical games is coming to an end

The company had previously also made it clear that it completely ignores the opinions of those who are dissatisfied.

Sony continues to prepare for the abandonment of physical game releases for PlayStation, confirming that it does not intend to change previously announced plans. On the boxes of new versions of disc-equipped consoles, which have already begun to arrive in retail stores, users have found a special warning about the upcoming transition to a digital game distribution model.

The message, placed on the packaging in several languages, states that starting from January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be sold exclusively in digital format — through the PlayStation Store and from retailers in the form of digital codes. At the same time, game discs released before January 2028 will continue to work on consoles with an optical drive.

The appearance of such labeling indicates that the company is preparing buyers for changes in advance and, presumably, seeks to avoid possible legal claims in the future related to the cessation of physical media production.

Despite criticism from some parts of the gaming community, Sony shows no intention of revising its strategy. The company has already begun retraining employees at its facility in Austria, which was involved in the production of physical media, and previously told investors that it does not observe any noticeable impact of online protests on its business.
