A game for people with "zero attention span": one of Halo's creators spoke about the remake
Marcus Lehto even called some cutscenes "absolutely cringe-worthy."
Halo series co-creator and Master Chief designer Marcus Lehto shared his impressions of playing Halo: Campaign Evolved. The developer said that he is slowly playing through the remake on Heroic difficulty and was generally pleased with the updated version of the cult shooter, although he noted several controversial decisions.
According to Lehto, he especially liked the improved animations, movement system, cutscene staging, and graphics. He specifically praised the reworked lighting, calling it one of the game's main strengths.
However, the developer admitted that not all innovations appealed to him. In particular, he criticized some new cutscenes, calling them "absolutely cringe-worthy". Lehto was especially negative about the new final scene of the Assault on the Control Room mission, stating that he "cannot unsee it". Despite this, he noted that he liked most of the creative changes and additions.
Lehto also explained why he chose Heroic difficulty. According to him, this was the difficulty level that Bungie developers used to test how engaging a mission was. The Legendary mode, in his opinion, is intended exclusively for players who "love suffering".
The developer praised the Halo Studios team for porting the game to the Unreal Engine, emphasizing that such work required serious effort. In addition, he positively evaluated the updated weaponry: the assault rifle, according to him, feels significantly better, and Covenant weapons have become more powerful and "heavier."
The new lighting received special mention. Lehto admitted that in the original Halo: Combat Evolved, the lighting in the Flood missions was "terrible", so he considers the changes in the remake to be one of the most successful improvements.
At the same time, the author of Halo criticized the new hint system, which tells players where to go next. In his opinion, it is too intrusive and designed for a modern audience with "zero attention span".
Lehto also spoke about the negative reaction of some of the community to Campaign Evolved. He believes that social networks contribute to the spread of negativity, whereas when playing together, most fans would probably enjoy the project.
