Sony's Rejection of Discs Will Allow Publishers to Save $10 on Each $70 Game Sold
Sony plans to completely stop producing physical discs for new games starting January 2028.
Sony's decision to cease production of physical discs for new games could significantly reduce publishers' costs. According to GameFile, companies pay Sony and Microsoft approximately 15–20% of a game's suggested retail price for the production of physical copies intended for sale in stores.
Thus, producing a disc for a $70 game costs the publisher approximately $10.50–14, and for an $80 project, it's already $12–16. As an example, Grand Theft Auto 6, whose standard edition is expected to cost $80, can be cited.
However, the potential savings will directly depend on the number of discs a particular publisher ordered for their games. If most sales already come from digital versions, the financial impact of abandoning physical media will be relatively small.
