"We'd Be Idiots": 'Lanterns' Creators Intend to Use Full Potential of Green Lanterns
The superhero "True Detective" won't be limited to an investigation in rural America.
The upcoming series "Lanterns" from HBO and DC Studios is often compared to a superhero version of "True Detective." Showrunner Chris Mundy said that the creators indeed chose a more grounded approach to the story from the very beginning:
"We made that decision pretty quickly. No one was asking, 'Maybe we should do it differently?' We said, 'This is how we're going to do it' — and started building the story. From the beginning, everyone was fully confident in this approach."
First and foremost, the creators want to introduce viewers to John Stewart and Hal Jordan and build the relationship between the characters. Along with them, the scale of events will gradually grow:
"We wanted the characters to be firmly grounded at first. Then you can develop their relationships, build trust within the series, and gradually do more."
However, the grounded premise will not prevent "Lanterns" from utilizing the fantastic capabilities of the rings and the rich mythology of the heroes:
"We'd be idiots if we didn't use everything the Green Lanterns universe has to offer. The characters have powers and rings, their world is much larger — which means our narrative can also grow. Sometimes we had to remind ourselves that there could be as much science fiction in the series as we wanted."
The gradual expansion of scale was already hinted at in the second trailer. It showed the abilities of the Green Lanterns, Sinestro, and several scenes that, apparently, take place outside of Earth. In addition, the story will cover two time periods — 2016 and 2026.
The premiere of the first season of "Lanterns" will take place on August 17 on HBO.
