"Beware of Butterflies": George Martin Spoiled the Final Scene of "House of the Dragon" Season Three Two Years Ago
The final episode of the third season of "House of the Dragon" premiered on HBO, after which the writer's deleted post took on new meaning.

The finale of the third season of "House of the Dragon" brought back memories of George Martin's post "Beware of Butterflies," which appeared in September 2024. The writer deleted it shortly after its release, but the full text was preserved in an archive. Two years later, it turned out that Martin had essentially revealed the last scene of the third season in advance.
The writer's main complaint was the exclusion of Maelor, the youngest son of Aegon and Helaena. Initially, showrunner Ryan Condal explained this by the costs and difficulties of filming with a small child, but intended to add the character later. Subsequently, Martin learned that Maelor had been completely removed from the series.
According to the writer, this change triggered a butterfly effect. Without Maelor, the series lost several events associated with him, including a key circumstance that determined Helaena's further fate.
"Maelor is only two years old, but, like our butterfly, he influences history much more than his age would suggest. [...] Larger and more poisonous butterflies await us if 'House of the Dragon' implements some of the changes planned for the third and fourth seasons."
In the book, the news of Maelor's cruel death finally broke Helaena. Her subsequent death gave rise to rumors of Rhaenyra's involvement and provoked unrest in King's Landing.
At the same time, Martin already knew in 2024 that Condal intended to preserve Helaena's fate even after Maelor's exclusion:
"In Ryan's plan for the third season, Helaena still [dies] — for no reason. There is no new horror, no event capable of finally breaking the fragile young queen."
In the finale of the third season, everything happened exactly as Martin described. After several visions, Helaena threw herself out of the window. Soon, the series showed Alicent heading to King's Landing, near whom a swarm of blue butterflies took flight.
At this moment, the title of Martin's publication acquired a literal meaning. In 2024, the writer used butterflies as a metaphor for small changes capable of triggering a chain of serious plot consequences. Two years later, "House of the Dragon" literally concluded this storyline with the appearance of butterflies on screen.
As The Hollywood Reporter has already found out, "Beware of Butterflies" was supposed to be the first of six Martin's materials about the problems of "House of the Dragon." The publication was deleted after HBO's intervention, and the writer never released the other five parts. At the same time, the warning about larger and "more poisonous" butterflies concerned not only the third, but also the fourth season. What other changes Martin intended to criticize is unknown.
