Chris Carter Wants Mulder and Scully Back for a True X-Files Finale
The controversial finale of the eleventh season was part of a larger plan by The X-Files creator.
The X-Files creator Chris Carter said that he still wants to continue and conclude the story of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. According to him, the last seasons left several plotlines that were supposed to develop upon the show's next return.
The finale of the eleventh season, in which Scully informed Mulder of her pregnancy, caused particular controversy. Carter admits that viewers were dissatisfied, but claims that the story was not supposed to end there:
"They told me I didn't give the audience what they wanted. I think I didn't give them what they expected. But a continuation was still supposed to follow. Four episodes from the last two revivals were part of a larger plan that I hope to reveal to X-Files fans if we get the chance to return to the series again."
Carter doesn't yet know in what format he will be able to conclude the story — as another season or a feature film. First, he intends to wait for the new version of The X-Files from "Sinners" director Ryan Coogler and does not want to compete with the project:
"I don't want to do anything that would compete with it or get in its way. I want to continue and finish the storyline I conceived. At the same time, I look forward to Coogler's version. My name is listed as executive producer, but I haven't done anything for the project."
Carter didn't even read Coogler's script, as he wants to experience the new interpretation of The X-Files simultaneously with other viewers. The possibility of two versions coexisting, he says, will depend on how the new series turns out.
Coogler has already filmed a pilot episode for Hulu. The main roles were played by Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel — they will play new characters, not younger versions of Scully and Mulder. The premiere date has not yet been announced.
