"The Walking Dead" Twice Prevented Jeffrey Dean Morgan from Starring in "The Boys" - Actor Talks About His Path to the Role of Joe Kessler
Eric Kripke started offering the actor roles after the first season of "The Boys."
Jeffrey Dean Morgan could have joined "The Boys" long before appearing as Joe Kessler in the fourth season. In the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor said that the show's creator, Eric Kripke, first offered him a role during the preparation for the second season:
"When 'The Boys' came out, I wrote something on social media like, 'Oh my God.' I'd never seen anything like it. Eric, I guess, saw the post, responded to me, and then called and asked, 'Do you want to play someone?' This was back for the second season."
Negotiations resumed before the third season, but both times, filming for "The Walking Dead" prevented Morgan from fitting into "The Boys'" schedule. During this time, Kripke managed to offer him at least two characters, whose names the actor did not disclose:
"I had the opportunity to play a couple of roles that could have been a lot of fun. I won't say which ones, but sometimes I think about what could have happened. It always came down to scheduling."
Morgan only managed to get to "The Boys" in the fourth season. The actor played Joe Kessler - a long-time acquaintance of Billy Butcher - and was particularly pleased with the joint scenes with Karl Urban:
"There was an immediate chemistry between us - obvious and a lot of fun. It suited these two characters perfectly. We had a great time."
For Morgan, "The Boys" also marked a reunion with Kripke: the showrunner previously worked with the actor on "Supernatural," where he played John Winchester.
