Hideo Kojima Compares Critically Panned Netflix Hit to Death Stranding

The game designer found familiar themes in the story of a family isolated inside their own home.

Hideo Kojima watched Netflix's sci-fi thriller “The Last House” and noticed similarities to Death Stranding:

Fans have long tried to determine the developer's opinion of films based on the length of his posts, believing that more detailed comments indicate a higher rating. However, Kojima himself has never confirmed this theory, so drawing conclusions from the brevity of the message is not advisable.

“The Last House” tells the story of Jason and Anne, who, along with their two children, find themselves trapped inside their own home after a mysterious force blocks off the entire neighborhood. Due to the rain accompanying the disaster, the family cannot leave their shelter and is forced to survive on their existing supplies.

While it's difficult to gauge Kojima's opinion of the film, critics' and viewers' reactions to “The Last House” are much clearer. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received 26% positive reviews from critics and 28% from the audience. Reviewers criticize the film for its underdeveloped script and insufficiently explored characters.

However, the cool reception from critics did not prevent “The Last House” from becoming a big hit for Netflix. The film topped the weekly ranking of English-language films on the service and garnered 27.5 million views in its first three days, becoming one of the most successful starts for original Netflix films in 2026.

“The Last House” was directed by Louis Leterrier, who helmed “Now You See Me” and “Fast X”. The main roles were played by Wagner Moura and Greta Lee. The film was released on Netflix on August 7.
