Disney has launched an animated series based on Kingdom Hearts into production. The project will tell an original story that expands the game universe. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura and other Square Enix employees are involved in the development of the adaptation.

Disney Kids & Family President Ayo Davis emphasized that the creators are working closely with Nomura and want to preserve the recognizable features of Kingdom Hearts:

"Kingdom Hearts has captivated players worldwide with its unique blend of adventure and fantasy. It's especially exciting to take a world that fans have explored for years in games and bring it to life in a completely new way. Our creative team is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, so the new series will remain unmistakably Kingdom Hearts while also giving fans a new perspective on their beloved world."

During the announcement, Disney also showed the first frame of the series, where Sora can be seen with the Keyblade. Other details are scarce for now: the company has not revealed the other characters and has not announced whether the plot will be related to the events of the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV.

The series will be released on Disney Channel and Disney+, but the premiere date has not yet been announced.

Kingdom Hearts has existed since 2002 and combines characters from Square Enix, Disney, and Pixar. During this time, the games in the series have sold over 39 million copies worldwide.
