Helldivers 2 fan comments are dangerous for developers' mental health - vulnerable specialists had conversations and restricted access to social media

This year, Helldivers 2 Design Director Niklas Malmborg gave an interview to the author of the Main Quest YouTube channel. During the conversation, Niklas Malmborg spoke about the specifics of organizing work at Arrowhead Game Studios and the measures taken to protect developers from aggression on the network.

Developers study feedback, but Niklas jokingly noted that there are places “where it’s better not to look to keep your sanity.” For example, posts on Reddit — not all developers are mentally prepared to accept such criticism and rude language.

Therefore, Niklas explains, it was decided to restrict specialists' access to social networks. At the same time, he himself actively studies the most “harsh” communities, such as HelldiversUnfiltered:

Personally, I can read almost anything — it doesn't really bother me [...] I even look into the HelldiversUnfiltered section, which... well, let's just say: it's very harsh for us, and... I try to study everything. But we tell some developers: “Listen, just look in these places — they're fine,” because some developers are very strongly affected [by comments] [...]

Niklas said that he had to have conversations with some Helldivers 2 developers and explain which sources they could access and which they should not:

You have to have one-on-one conversations with [developers] to explain: “You need to get off social media, you can't look in these places, you need to stop following these people.” Because if you go too deep, it can lead to a deterioration in mental health, because some people have a tendency... well, you know, if they see, for example, nine good reviews and one bad one, all the attention is focused on the one bad one.
