Chris Roberts' Clever Move: Squadron 42 Postponed to Avoid Competing with Grand Theft Auto VI
Star Citizen development began before Grand Theft Auto V was launched. Almost 14 years have passed, two generations of PlayStation and Xbox consoles have changed, and the developers still cannot name even approximate release dates for the game.
Squadron 42 has been postponed once again. The single-player story game in the Star Citizen universe is now expected to be released in the second quarter of 2027, although its release was originally planned for 2015.
The postponement was announced by Chris Roberts, head of Cloud Imperium Games and project lead. According to him, the team initially expected to release Squadron 42 in the fourth quarter of 2026, roughly around the period of the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE).
However, plans had to be revised due to Grand Theft Auto VI. Roberts explicitly stated that he does not want to release Squadron 42 simultaneously with the new GTA.
I don't want to send the spiritual successor to Wing Commander, into which twelve years of blood, sweat, and tears have been poured, into the information grinder of GTA 6.
Anticipating the natural remarks that Squadron 42 is announced for PC, while GTA VI will only be released on consoles, Roberts hastened to state that Rockstar's project will inevitably draw a huge amount of attention from the press, bloggers, and streamers, and it will be extremely difficult for Squadron 42 to get the necessary attention.
