Rockstar revealed when it started making GTA VI

Development of GTA VI began back in 2015, and the main part of the team joined the work after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, said Rockstar North head Rob Nelson.

In an interview with Trois Couleurs, Nelson explained why Rockstar takes so long to develop games. According to him, the team tries to choose ideas that will not become outdated by the time of release.

We develop games for a very long time. The project has been in development since 2015, so the idea has been brewing for a very long time.

At the same time, most of the developers began full-fledged work on GTA VI only after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Nelson noted that over the years of development, current events and internet memes can change significantly, so Rockstar carefully chooses themes for satire.

Most of the team actually started working on it after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. We have to be very careful about the ideas we want to put in there, because it can take a long time to figure out exactly how to present them.

Rockstar also created new tools to develop the diversity of characters and images of modern Vice City. According to Nelson, completing GTA VI can take at least 80 hours. The game will be released on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
