"Fun and Audacity": Street Fighter Film Director Reveals What the New Movie Will Be Like
The film will combine nostalgia for old action movies with absurd humor.
The director of the new Street Fighter adaptation, Kitao Sakurai, spoke about his approach to the film. According to him, the creators initially wanted to deviate from the classic formula of game adaptations:
"Everyone wanted to make a film with a distinct style and approach that didn't look like a typical video game adaptation. I was invited to do something unconventional and was really allowed to do my own thing," said Sakurai.
The choice of director aligns with this idea. Sakurai previously worked primarily on comedic projects, including the absurdist "The Eric Andre Show," as well as the series "Twisted Metal" based on the Twisted Metal franchise. However, Street Fighter will be his first major-budget film for the big screen.
The director cited home movies he made as a child with a friend, trying to imitate Jet Li's action films, as one of his inspirations:
"I wanted to keep that sense of fun and audacity, where you don't worry about what others think. I hope we managed to combine nostalgia with something fresh."
The film's events unfold in 1993. Years after their falling out, Ryu and Ken Masters will meet again at the World Warrior tournament, to which Chun-Li invites them. A conspiracy by M. Bison lies behind the competition, forcing the former friends to confront each other and deal with their own past.
Ryu is played by Andrew Koji, Ken Masters by Noah Centineo, Chun-Li by Callina Liang, and M. Bison by David Dastmalchian. The film will also feature Cody Rhodes as Guile, Jason Momoa as Blanka, and many others. The premiere of "Street Fighter" is scheduled for October 16, 2026.
