Fable Won't Have Useless Upgrades - Developers Promise Serious Changes

Fable won't have minor upgrades like a 1% damage boost - developers promise significant ability changes, and some items from chests will allow players to increase their hero's social status.

Playground Games Creative Director Will Kennedy said in an interview that the developers want to make character progression truly noticeable.

We want our upgrades to be, as we call them, truly meaningful. So you won't get something like, 'Oh, 1% damage' and so on. Instead, the changes will be much more substantial.

As an example, Kennedy cited the weapon enchantment spell. Initially, it allows you to toss enemies into the air, and after upgrading, it becomes possible to slam them to the ground, significantly expanding the ability's potential.

Loot will also be tied to social mechanics. According to Game Director Craig Littler, chests can contain gifts for NPCs that can be used to interact with the world's inhabitants.

For example, you might find a gift that interacts with the life system. I don't know what kind of gifts you can find in an old mine – maybe something like a "Blister Pouch" – but once you collect it, you can use this item on NPCs throughout the world.

The game will feature a sword and shield, a two-handed hammer, a bow, and a crossbow. Fable will be released on February 23, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
