Focusing on Original Fans: The Coalition Wants to Bring Back the Original Gears of War with E-Day
Fans of the Gears of War series should be pleased.
The developers of Gears of War: E-Day are not going to look to other popular game series for new ideas. According to The Coalition's creative director Matt Searcy, the team wants to develop the very qualities that made the original Gears of War games so beloved by players.
In a new interview, The Coalition's creative director Matt Searcy said that when creating E-Day, the developers primarily relied on the foundation of the first games in the series. The team wanted to present a modern game, built almost from scratch on the same principles that made the original Gears of War successful.
Ultimately, we're leaning into the things that made the original games great. What if we just built a modern new game and a new engine from the ground up around those foundations? [...] We want to be known for all the things that originally resonated with players in Gears.
One of these features, the developers believe, is the signature cover-based shooting. The Coalition notes that Gears of War has always been one of the best series in this regard, and its recognizable style was complemented by extremely brutal battles with monsters.
The Coalition's brand director Nicole Fawcette also reminded that the series is traditionally famous for its impressive graphics and its desire to maximize the capabilities of gaming hardware. According to her, the team has a unique connection to this legacy: many employees of The Coalition previously worked at Epic Games — the studio that created the original Gears of War.
