"Spider-Man: A New Day" Becomes Third Highest-Grossing Film in History

Only "Avengers: Endgame" and James Cameron's original "Avatar" remain ahead.

The worldwide box office gross for "Spider-Man: A New Day" has exceeded $2.33 billion. With updated international box office results, the film has surpassed "Avatar: The Way of Water" to become the third highest-grossing film in history.

The change occurred after the release of fresh weekend data from South Korea. According to the state system KOBIS, whose data is cited by Variety, "A New Day" grossed $65 million in the country. As a result, the film's worldwide box office increased to $2.336 billion, while "Avatar: The Way of Water," including re-releases, earned $2.334 billion.

To climb another spot, the film will have to try very hard. "Avengers: Endgame" grossed $2.799 billion, and the original "Avatar" remains the leader with $2.924 billion. These figures do not seem unattainable, but "A New Day" has been in theaters for a month now, so there is less and less time for the chase.

In North America, "A New Day" holds the top spot for the fifth consecutive week. Over the past weekend, the film earned another $22.2 million, bringing its domestic gross to $891.5 million. The next target is "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which holds the North American record with $936.7 million.
