One of The Witcher 3's best quests now embarrasses the developer - he admitted to making a lot of mistakes
This summer, CD Projekt RED presented players with the remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Against this backdrop, some players began actively discussing the game online again.
Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Director and The Witcher 3 quest designer Paweł Sasko shared his opinion on one of the game's best quests in an interview. During a conversation with Kotaku, he noted that today he would approach the development of the Bloody Baron's storyline differently.
Now, Paweł explains, he understands his mistakes — from a narrative perspective, everything is fine, but the quest turned out to be too long:
I made so many mistakes in the Bloody Baron quest... structurally, it takes almost four hours of gameplay. Narratively, the quest is good, but I could have told this story better if I had structured the rhythm differently.
Paweł noted that while working on expansions, CD Projekt RED developed principles for designing such quests — players should be offered blocks of story gameplay for approximately 40 minutes, and then given a break:
Using the example of expansions for both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, we learned to structure gameplay, dividing it into blocks: approximately 40 minutes of intense, thematically consistent gameplay and story. After that, we give the player a break: the world opens up for exploration again.
However, he clarified that developers do not always follow this rule. For example, it can be broken in the finale or in a quest like Somewhat Damaged from Phantom Liberty: “In such cases, we deliberately do not allow the player to put down the gamepad, because we want them to feel exhausted by the situation.”
The release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remaster is scheduled for September 29 this year, and the story expansion Songs of the Past is planned for release next year (a more precise release date has not yet been announced).
