"Gameplay is Outdated": The Creator of The Witcher 3 Explained Why They Are Making a Remaster and Compared It to the Cyberpunk 2.0 Update
The developers studied feedback and prepared many gameplay improvements.
At Gamescom, CD Projekt RED presented players with the remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and also showed gameplay of the story expansion Songs of the Past. After that, the developers began to gradually reveal various details and give interviews.
Quest designer Paweł Sasko, in an interview with Kotaku, said that internally at CD Projekt RED, the remaster is perceived as "The Witcher 3 2.0". According to the developers, the game's gameplay was outdated (this was noted in reviews) and they wanted to fix this shortcoming:
If you look at player and press opinions on The Witcher 3, the most criticism was directed at the gameplay itself – it's the most outdated aspect of the game. Our primary goal was to fix that. Having worked on the 2.0 update for Cyberpunk, we perceive this remaster almost as a major overhaul in the spirit of the [The Witcher 3 version 2.0].

Paweł Sasko explained that the developers used the lessons from Cyberpunk 2077, for which they had previously created a large 2.0 update with many fixes and improvements. They studied the problematic aspects of The Witcher 3 and then corrected them:
We applied the same design principles to RedEngine 3 that we mastered through working with RedEngine 4 in Cyberpunk. We analyzed what annoyed players the most – for example, world exploration, Geralt's movement controls, and the lack of finishing moves. All of this has been fixed, and these changes have had the strongest impact on the gameplay experience.
The release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remaster is expected on September 29, 2026, and the Songs of the Past expansion is planned for release next year.
