Even RTX 5090 Can't Handle DLSS 5: Performance Drops Up to 49%
DLSS 5 technology proved to be so demanding that even the GeForce RTX 5090 hits power limits, and performance in some games drops by almost half.
Tom's Hardware compared the RTX 5090 Founders Edition and MSI RTX 5090 Lightning Z in Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and Control. The difference became noticeable after enabling Neural Rendering. In Cyberpunk 2077, the MSI card consumed 723W and was approximately 17% faster than the Founders Edition, which was limited to 575W.
In Hogwarts Legacy, the performance drop was 49% for the RTX 5090 FE and 42% for the Lightning Z, which consumed 720W. In Control, MSI's power consumption reached 802W, and its advantage over the Founders Edition was about 20%.
The results indicate that the Founders Edition's power limit can restrict DLSS 5. However, the test was conducted using a custom OptiScaler without frame generation, not on an official implementation. It is also impossible to separate the influence of power connectors from other differences between the cards. Neural Rendering reduces base performance by 39–49%.
