Fable developers couldn't create a quality character generator - they had to do it manually

News

The generator produced strange results, so the developers decided to create NPCs themselves.

Recently, the game director of the new Fable gave an interview and spoke about their approach to work. As it turned out, characters for the game were created manually, although initially the development team at Playground Games had a different plan.

In a conversation with GamesRadar+, Fable game director Ralph Fulton explained that in the early stages of development, they created a character generator, but the resulting NPCs sometimes looked a bit strange. The generation produced an absurd combination of appearance, behavior, and other characteristics, such as a hairdresser with a bad haircut or a person who works as a butcher but is a vegan.

Ultimately, Playground Games decided to use a manual approach: they manually configured about a thousand characters. According to the developer, NPC characteristics will influence their attitude towards the main character. For example, some will be attracted by his wealth, while others will consider him a snob.

You can add Fable to your Steam wishlist via this link. The regular release is scheduled for February 23, 2027, but owners of the Premium Edition will receive digital bonuses and premium early access — they will be able to start playing five days earlier. The game will be available on PC, as well as on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles.
