Cheaters in Counter-Strike 2 Started Canceling Losing Matches with Fake VAC Bans
Recently, a post by a Counter-Strike 2 player named itzsagka went viral on social media. He reported that, apparently, “the most BROKEN critical vulnerability” had been discovered:
Apparently, players banned by the VAC system are somehow infiltrating VAC-protected servers AND, allegedly, manipulating the VAC Live system to flag other players [as cheaters].
The vulnerability allows cheaters to be protected — from the system's perspective, the attacker will already be banned, and it also allows manipulating the match outcome: if VAC Live detects a player flagged as a “cheater” in a match, it will cancel the match results. For example, this way one can avoid defeat.
A user named aquaismissing responded to the publication and clarified that these are not real VAC bans, but fake ones. Cheaters are deceiving the system and editing their profile status:
There is currently a vulnerability in Counter-Strike 2 that allows attackers to fake their status as “VAC banned,” which automatically triggers the VAC Live system and cancels the match.
Essentially, any sufficiently advanced cheater now has the technical ability to use cheats with impunity and cancel matches in Counter-Strike 2. Players are urging Valve to address this security flaw as soon as possible.
