The authors of RPCS3 said that this option for launching games from physical media on PC became possible thanks to digant73 and Megamouse:

Recent changes in RPCS3 have expanded direct disc drive launch support: previously it only worked on Windows, and now it is also available on Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. In addition, the package installation time directly from the disc drive has been optimized.

The developers of the RPCS3 emulator published a list of compatible disc drives.

Other tech enthusiasts continue to develop PlayStation 5 emulators. Grand Theft Auto V is already quite playable, and some players hope that the upcoming GTA VI will also be able to be launched with an emulator at some point.
