Italian Swordsman: Capcom was inspired by Super Mario when working on the combat system of Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Gundam Versus is also mentioned among the sources of inspiration.
The creators of Onimusha: Way of the Sword spoke about unusual sources of inspiration that influenced the development of the new installment in the series. It turned out that among them were not only samurai games, but also Super Mario Odyssey and Gundam Versus.
In an interview with the Swedish publication FZ, game director Satoru Nihei said that one of the key games that influenced his work on Onimusha: Way of the Sword was Super Mario Odyssey. According to him, the Nintendo project combines a simple and accessible entry into gameplay with a large number of dynamic and complex situations.
Nihei was particularly impressed by how the game conveys the physical sensations of the character's actions. He gave the example of a jump: after performing the action, the player receives a natural reaction — for example, feeling the influence of gravity and landing.
Super Mario Odyssey. It's an action game that's very easy to pick up and play, but it also has a lot of dynamic and complex elements, which Nintendo is especially good at.
According to the developer, it was this feeling of interconnectedness between the player's actions and the game world's reaction that became his guide when creating the controls in Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
Producer Akihito Kadowaki named other sources of inspiration. In addition to a brief mention of Silent Hill f, he highlighted the Gundam series, specifically Gundam Versus for PlayStation 4.
Kadowaki noted that he spent a lot of time and money on Gundam, and the character design particularly influenced his work on Onimusha. In his opinion, the Gundam universe is known for charismatic and well-developed characters who directly drive the plot forward. This is the approach he wanted to bring to the new Onimusha.
