Cyberpunk 2077 Creator Explains First-Person Perspective Choice and Challenges It Caused

CD Projekt RED decided to use a first-person perspective in Cyberpunk 2077. Many players did not appreciate this decision and to this day call for the addition of a third-person perspective and release mods with an alternative camera.

In a recent interview with 80 Level, Environment Art Director Kacper Niepokólczycki said that the team did not immediately arrive at the first-person perspective. The option of using a third-person perspective was also considered in the early stages of Cyberpunk 2077's development.

Using a first-person perspective, Niepokólczycki explains, created new challenges for the team:

The transition to a first-person perspective was a serious challenge for all of us. I remember when the whole team made this decision, there were certain doubts at first. We had never worked with a first-person perspective before, so there was a lot to learn and master. But now, looking back, I believe it was absolutely the right decision. It allowed us to immediately immerse the player in what was happening and made the entire gaming experience much more immersive. It was a difficult path, but I think everyone will agree that in the end it paid off wonderfully.

Developers had to rethink their approach to cinematic scenes. In The Witcher, these are usually simple cutscenes, while in Cyberpunk 2077, these scenes are interactive environments where the player can, in most cases, move around, turn their head, and interact with objects. Therefore, Niepokólczycki explains, the process of creating and designing a scene became much more complex:

In The Witcher, we decorated the environment and created a beautiful shot with Geralt at its center. In Cyberpunk 2077, we had to create a full 360-degree environment capable of accommodating all NPCs involved in the scene. It had to be meticulously designed so that from the player's perspective it looked rich and harmoniously composed. Additionally, it was necessary to build an appropriate background for NPCs — one that would emphasize the scene and help reveal it, and then also properly set the lighting. As a result, the process became much more complex, but when executed skillfully, the result was incredibly impressive.

Some players to this day debate the necessity of releasing an update for Cyberpunk 2077 with an official third-person perspective. CD Projekt RED has not yet implemented it, but various modders are doing so. For example, earlier this year, another modification was released for the game that adds a third-person perspective. Character animations were also refined for this project.
