DayZ creators explained why they abandoned bicycles but made motorcycles for the Badlands DLC
Some players thought that implementing bicycles would be much easier.
Recently, developers from Bohemia Interactive studio gave an interview to 87.8 Survivor FM. DayZ project lead “Thales” and lead designer “Özgür” discussed the upcoming Badlands expansion.
In Badlands, events will unfold in the scorching province of Nasdara. Players will explore the largest official DayZ map (267 square kilometers). Travel around the world will be possible on two-wheeled vehicles — the developers confirmed the appearance of motorcycles in the game.
Given the post-apocalyptic setting of DayZ, many players might wonder: why not add bicycles to the game? They don't have engines, so they don't need gasoline, and their use would seem quite logical.
The DayZ developer explained that “bicycles are much more difficult and problematic to implement in the game than motorcycles.” Implementing bicycles would require more resources — many animations need to be prepared, and the engine also has technical limitations:
There are certain problems because our vehicle simulation system is quite complex and fragile; and we know that. Therefore, adding any new vehicles causes difficulties. Basic functionality, for example, something in a purely arcade style, so that the object just moves forward and turns left and right — it can certainly be implemented, but it will look terrible.
In addition, the DayZ developer explains, animations would have to be worked out. In the case of a bicycle, many more of them need to be made — different poses, different speeds, body behavior on slopes, etc., must be taken into account:
All this is significantly more complex than with motorcycles. Therefore, from a technical point of view, implementing such a system would be more difficult, and from the point of view of animation production — even more difficult. It would require adding many more options for character interaction with the bicycle, different fall variations, and all that.
The creators of DayZ admit that adding bicycles to the game would indeed seem logical, but they consider the costs of implementing such transport unjustified. In their opinion, resources should be directed to solving other problems.
You can add the Badlands DLC for DayZ to your wishlist on Steam via the following link. The release is scheduled for October 15 (the DLC page has not yet been updated; the release date still indicates only the release window “2026”).
