Troy Baker Revealed How He Was "Fired" From "Fullmetal Alchemist" Because of Laughter
Before getting the role in "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," the actor had already tried to get into the previous manga adaptation.
Troy Baker recounted how he lost the role of Greed in the English dub of the 2003 anime “Fullmetal Alchemist.” The future voice of Joel from The Last of Us failed the very first scene, which required him to laugh for 30 seconds:
“In the first version of ‘Fullmetal Alchemist,’ I was invited to voice a character named Greed. And in the very first scene, I was required to deliver 30 seconds of gradually escalating maniacal laughter.”
Baker and the director spent about 15-20 minutes recording, but they couldn't achieve a suitable result. That's where the actor's work on the character ended:
“We tried to record that scene for about 15 or 20 minutes, because every time my laugh sounded terrible. Kind of like air coming out of a balloon. It was bad. The director said, ‘Maybe you should step out of the booth, buddy?’ Well, at least I found out what I can’t do: I can’t laugh. It became especially funny a few years later when I had to audition for another character known for his laughter.”
Baker was referring to the Joker, whom he later voiced in Batman: Arkham Origins and several other DC projects.
Ultimately, the actor did get a second chance to play Greed in “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood,” which more closely followed the original manga's plot. Before starting work, Baker decided to clarify one thing immediately:
“When I was invited to ‘Brotherhood,’ the first thing I asked was, ‘Will he have to laugh?’ The director replied, ‘No maniacal laughter.’”
