New game from Age of Empires creators canceled as part of Xbox restructuring
World's Edge was confidently looking to the future, but it didn't work out.
World's Edge studio, known primarily for the Age of Empires series, has lost its next project. According to several former team employees, the new game under development was canceled after another stage of Xbox restructuring.
Official details about the canceled project have not yet been disclosed. However, former World's Edge creative director Adam Isgreen recently stated that the studio had “great plans for the future”. Later, senior software engineer Andrew Martz confirmed that due to the reorganization of the team under Activision, World's Edge's next project was canceled.
It cannot yet be stated that this was a new installment of Age of Empires. However, given the studio's specialization, it was almost certainly a real-time strategy game. World's Edge is involved in the development of the Age of Empires franchise and has been working in this direction since its inception.
The project's cancellation was part of a large-scale Xbox overhaul. As part of the latest round of layoffs, almost half of World's Edge employees left the studio. These layoffs are part of Microsoft's plan, announced in July, to cut approximately 3,200 jobs in the gaming division.
