Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember will feature more open locations, a revamped combat system, and less grinding
The game is being developed with Rise of the Ronin and Nioh 3 in mind.
The developers of Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember have revealed new details about the sequel to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.
One of the main innovations will be the transition from separate linear arenas to large open fields. The developers acknowledged that for some players, the need to constantly explore locations to increase rank was perceived as an imposed mechanic.
When creating Wo Long 2, the Team NINJA team used their experience developing more open games, including Rise of the Ronin and Nioh 3. Players can now independently choose their route and influence events in different parts of the map.
Fortified bases with enemy generals will appear in locations. By defeating some of them, the player will be able to recruit them into their army, and then assign generals to defend already captured territories. Placing characters at bases will provide various advantages and enhance the player's influence in a specific territory.
In the sequel, morale now effectively works as an additional layer on top of the usual experience point progression system. After leveling up, the player will not lose accumulated progress due to defeat. This means that a sufficiently leveled character will be able to fight opponents at a comparable level, without being forced to constantly search for battle flags to restore their advantage.
Another crucial area of development has been the combat system. While the first Wo Long focused primarily on parrying and a smooth transition between offense and defense, in the sequel, Team NINJA decided to add more verticality.
To achieve this, the developers created a skill understanding system that enhances standard character actions. The same enhanced deflection can not only parry an attack but also knock back an opponent, dealing significant damage.
In addition, attacks can now be canceled more quickly by transitioning into defensive actions. The player will be able to aggressively attack an opponent, and upon detecting a counterattack, almost immediately transition to deflection. The developers expect this to make the transition between offense and defense a more natural part of one continuous movement.
Many techniques that were performed exclusively on the ground in the first game can now be used in the air. Spells can also be cast while moving, and some familiar techniques have gained new properties depending on the character's position.
Changes have also affected enemies. Players can now deflect attacks directly in the air, closing the distance to flying enemies.
Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember will be released on March 4 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
