Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball modestly dodged a question about Xbox Series X|S's share of the console market.

Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders on PlayStation 5 appear to be significantly outperforming sales of the Xbox Series X|S version. Amid preparations for the game's release, this has raised new questions about Xbox's position in the console market. This was reported by The Verge journalist Tom Warren, after which Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball commented on the situation.

According to Ball, Microsoft is quite pleased with GTA VI pre-order results. Moreover, the game is already setting records on Xbox, and the company expects new records throughout the autumn.

Tom, we are very pleased with GTA VI pre-orders. The game is setting records for Xbox; we expect even more records to be set this autumn, and our internal analysis shows that our pre-order share is consistent with our console market share.

Ball did not deny that the PS5 version of GTA VI is selling better in pre-orders than the Xbox Series X|S version. His comment focused on a different metric: according to Microsoft's internal data, Xbox's pre-order share is consistent with the platform's share of the console market. When Warren asked a follow-up question about how Xbox assesses its current market share, Ball did not respond.
