PlayStation Hasn't Put an End to the Disc Story Yet - Negotiations with Publishers Are Underway
PlayStation may adjust its plans to abandon physical game editions from 2028: the head of Nippon Ichi Software confirmed negotiations with Sony and stated that the company takes player feedback into account.
The head of Nippon Ichi Software and president of NIS America, Kenzo Saruhashi, spoke at PAX West about PlayStation's plans and their impact on the publisher, for whom physical and especially collector's editions remain an important part of the business.
According to him, NIS currently has the same information as the public, but the company is not going to voluntarily abandon boxed releases.
A large part of our business model, especially in the case of NIS, is based on creating physical limited editions, and this is very important to us. For our part, we intend to continue preparing such editions and ensuring the quality that customers expect from us.

One option after Sony stops producing discs could be boxes with a code for downloading the game. The head of NIS confirmed that such a scenario is possible, but negotiations with PlayStation are already underway.
From our current conversations with Sony, it is clear that they are receiving a lot of customer feedback. While we may ultimately go down this path, it is possible that the discussion will change in the future. So we need to see where all this leads.
Sony previously collected opinions from publishers and players about physical editions. However, the company has not yet announced any changes to its plans.
