CD Projekt Spent 2 Years on One Battle in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty - The Chimera Was Redesigned 4 Times
Creating the Chimera battle in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty took developers two years, and the tank itself was redesigned four times, with changes to its equipment and weaponry.
Director Gabe Amatangelo, Art Director Paweł Mielniczuk and Creative Director Igor Sarzynski spoke about their work on the Chimera in the AnsweRED podcast.
Amatangelo said:
Sometimes, when we create content that brings together different disciplines, as in the case of the Chimera, it becomes a complex process. There's gameplay, narrative, visuals, and world-building. [...] We wanted the sound itself to be terrifying, to be overwhelming. So that you couldn't even hear the sounds of gunfire.
Mielniczuk continued:
I think it took us two years to really get this boss battle working. Yeah. We iterated on it again and again.
According to Amatangelo, the team had to find a balance between gameplay, narrative, and visuals. Mielniczuk added:
I think we made this tank four times, each time changing its equipment and weaponry. This is probably one of the most expensive graphical assets in history.
