Official Considers Gamers Parasites on Taxpayers' Necks

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders launched an advertising campaign in support of new requirements for receiving benefits, but the video unexpectedly drew criticism not only from opponents but also from some conservative commentators.

In the video released on September 28, Sanders introduces viewers to a fictional Brad — a young man in a hoodie who spends his day on the couch playing video games and eating snacks.

According to her, this is why the state introduced new requirements for receiving benefits: if a person is young, healthy, and receives government assistance, they must work, study, or volunteer.

This primarily concerns changes to the Medicaid ARHOME program. Since July 1, Arkansas has begun a soft launch of new rules for non-exempt residents aged 19 to 64. They must engage in work, study, vocational training, or volunteering for at least 80 hours per month. Among the provided exceptions are some pregnant and recently postpartum women, people with serious medical needs, certain categories of caregivers, and disabled veterans. According to the state, about 210,000 people were enrolled in ARHOME in May.

However, the main subject of discussion was not the mechanism itself, but the image of Brad. The video caused a significant negative reaction among many people who found it strange to portray a typical social assistance recipient as a young white male gamer, when the reality in many states is somewhat different.
