OpenAI announced a collaboration with ModRetro and distributed a limited edition of the Chromatic handheld to DevDay attendees

Thanks to OpenAI's Game Studio - a plugin for the Codex neural network - games for the Chromatic handheld console can be created from a text description and then compiled into ready-to-use ROM files compatible with original GB and GBC hardware. Also, attendees of OpenAI DevDay 2026 received a limited edition of Chromatic.

At the OpenAI DevDay 2026 conference, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unexpectedly announced a collaboration with ModRetro, a company focused on hardware revival, modernization, and preservation of retro games through physical media and quality hardware.

The Game Studio tool was introduced – an official plugin and specialized development environment designed for automated creation of 2D and 3D games using text descriptions and the Codex neural network. Thanks to it, projects for the Chromatic handheld console can also be created.

It's worth noting that ModRetro Chromatic is an FPGA-based device designed to run original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges without using software emulators.

OpenAI's Codex neural network has been integrated into the ModRetro ecosystem within Game Studio. Users can describe game mechanics in plain language, and the AI generates code that can be immediately run and tested in the built-in emulator.

The neural network also compiles games into ready-to-use ROM files compatible with original Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware. These can be written to a cartridge and played on a real device.

Additionally, at OpenAI DevDay, approximately 2500 participants received a limited edition of the ModRetro Chromatic DevDay Edition console. Along with the announcement, the companies published 13 ready-made games created by artificial intelligence.

Currently, projects such as FlapGPT, Ash & Oath, Cairn & Cinder, Codex Land, Arc Pocket, Ember Escape, Fetch Frenzy, Hollow Descent, Pizza Dash, Seedy's Sweet Garden, Swarmfall, Cloudfall, and WhoadexWare are available on a special website.
