"Lanterns" Sinks to the Bottom of DCU Audience Ratings - Even "Supergirl" Couldn't Fall So Low

Not all viewers appreciated the creative decisions of the creators.

The first season of the superhero detective series "Lanterns" recently concluded on HBO, and the show performed well in terms of viewership. The final episode set a project record, garnering 10.5 million viewers worldwide in its first three days, while the average season audience reached 19.3 million people per episode.

However, high viewership numbers do not mean that everyone liked the series. After the finale, the audience rating for "Lanterns" on Rotten Tomatoes dropped to 70%, although it was 89% at the start.

Now "Lanterns" occupies the last place in audience ratings among the released projects of the new DCU. Even "Supergirl" was slightly higher with 72%, while "Creature Commandos" and the second season of "Peacemaker" received 79% each, and "Superman" — 90%.

According to reviews, many viewers disliked the slow pacing and how the creators handled the characters. Others felt there wasn't enough superhero action — they wanted to see the Green Lanterns' abilities in action more often and learn more about the cosmic side of their story. But there are also those who enjoyed the detective intrigue and the actors' performances.

HBO has not yet officially renewed "Lanterns" for a second season. However, John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, will appear in "Superman: Legacy" — a continuation of "Superman" set to be released on July 9, 2027.
