Richard "Levelord" Gray, Legendary Level Designer and One of the Most Famous Industry Veterans, Has Died
Richard Gray, known in the gaming industry by the pseudonym Levelord, has passed away at the age of 68. The cause of death is unknown.
Gray was one of the most recognizable creators of game levels during the era of classic first-person shooters. His work on Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, and SiN helped shape the understanding of what level design could be in first-person shooter games.
Levelord's main achievement was his work on Duke Nukem 3D, released in 1996. Gray designed approximately half of the levels for the original game and its subsequent episodes, including maps such as The Abyss, Incubator, Warp Factor, Spin Cycle, Lunatic Fringe, Raw Meat, Bank Roll, Flood Zone, and L.A. Rumble.
Levelord's levels were remembered not only for their gunfights and thoughtful geometry but also for numerous secrets, unusual interactive objects, and hidden areas, the exploration of which rewarded attentive players. In an era when 3D shooters were rapidly developing, such solutions helped transform gameplay from simple movement from one skirmish to another into a full-fledged exploration of the game space.
