Xbox announced the creation of Xbox Labs - a new division for experimenting with games and technologies
New opportunities and AI experiments
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the creation of Xbox Labs — a new team that will focus on developing and testing experimental gaming products, tools, and features. The division is intended to accelerate the adoption of new ideas, make games more accessible to a wider audience, and provide players with more opportunities for creativity.
As Sharma explained in the official Xbox blog, the team will be small and will bring together game developers, engineers, and scientists already working within the company. The main principle of Xbox Labs is to quickly create prototypes, test ideas in practice, refine them based on feedback, and evaluate results based on user reactions.
One of the factors that prompted Microsoft to create Xbox Labs was the recent experiments by the gaming community with porting classic games to new platforms, as well as unusual game projects created using artificial intelligence tools.
According to Sharma, such initiatives demonstrate how to simplify access to good games, give old projects a second life, and allow more people to participate in game creation — independently or in collaboration with developers.
An example of this is the recent experiments with launching the original version of Halo: Combat Evolved directly in the browser. Such projects show that modern technologies allow for new ways of interacting with classic games, not limited to traditional platforms and distribution methods.
Sharma emphasized that such changes can be beneficial to players, even if they challenge the traditional business models of the gaming industry. In other words, Microsoft is ready to explore solutions that expand audience opportunities, even if their commercial value is not obvious at the initial stage.
Xbox clarified that Xbox Labs is not obligated to use artificial intelligence in its projects. A company representative explained to GamesIndustry.biz that the team will only use AI and other technologies when it genuinely brings benefits or is necessary for the implementation of a specific idea.
Despite the big announcement, Xbox Labs is not an entirely new direction for Microsoft. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the company has consolidated a number of existing research and experimental initiatives under the new name.
Among the areas the team will focus on are:
- Launching games in the browser. Exploring ways to distribute game content without the need to install a separate application
- Apple Silicon support. Working on porting games to Apple computers with the company's proprietary processors
- Modder tools. Developing and supporting solutions that allow users to modify games and create their own content
- New game features. Experimenting with additional capabilities and ways to interact with already released projects
- Multiplayer expansion. Researching new formats of multiplayer interaction
Special attention will be paid to browser technologies, in particular WebGPU — a modern web standard that allows the use of device graphics capabilities directly in the browser. In the future, such solutions can simplify access to games on different devices, although specific implementation timelines and the list of supported projects have not yet been disclosed.
A company representative also confirmed that no new employees were hired to create Xbox Labs: the team is formed from specialists already working at Microsoft.
