"Terrible Movie": Netflix Disappointed with New "Narnia" from "Barbie" Director - Insider

The streaming service fears the failure of the adaptation, on which it spent almost $300 million.

Back in August, insider Jeff Sneider reported that Netflix had scheduled reshoots for the film "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" after a mixed reaction to test screenings. Now he has shared new details about the problems with Greta Gerwig's adaptation. According to his information, disagreements arose between the director and Netflix's head of film division, Dan Lin, and within the company, the film is being called "terrible" and considered a "real problem".

As World of Reel writes, another of Sneider's sources, who attended a summer test screening, compared the film to Ava DuVernay's "A Wrinkle in Time". He also disliked the narrative structure: according to him, the main characters only reach Narnia in the third act.

Against this backdrop, Netflix is reportedly trying to fix the film not only with additional filming in London but also during the editing phase. Sneider claims that Gerwig has been brought in to help an experienced editor or director, or possibly both. At the same time, according to cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, the film's budget reached $280 million even before reshoots.

"The Magician's Nephew" will tell the story of the creation of Narnia and will be a prequel to the main story. The film stars Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, David McKenna, and Beatrice Campbell, with Meryl Streep voicing Aslan the lion.

The international theatrical release of "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" will begin on February 12, 2027. The film will be released on Netflix on April 2.
