One congratulation was not enough - James Cameron spoke out about the new victory of "Avengers" over "Avatar"
Re-releases have once again shifted the balance of power in the ranking of the highest-grossing films in history.
James Cameron reacted to the return of "Avengers: Endgame" to the top spot on the list of highest-grossing films in history. The director of "Avatar" published a congratulatory art piece, depicting Na'vi embracing Iron Man, and accompanied it with a message:
"You are one of us. Congratulations to Marvel and the first-place "Avengers: Endgame Re-release" for bringing audiences back to theaters!"
Although Cameron only published his congratulations now, "Avengers: Endgame" reclaimed the top spot in global box office on October 4. At that time, the film's total gross exceeded $2.9255 billion against "Avatar's" $2.9237 billion, and has since grown to $2.9383 billion.
It is noteworthy that this is Cameron's second congratulation to "Endgame." He published the first one in 2019, when "Avengers" surpassed "Avatar" during its initial theatrical run. But in 2021, a re-release brought Cameron's film back to first place. Now the rivalry has become a little "fairer," as both films have had the opportunity to boost their box office by returning to theaters.
